Aerial survey specialist IMAO acquires fifth aircraft - April 28, 2010:
IMAO, which specialises in digital aerial photography, has brought a fifth aircraft into operation and moved to new premises at Limoges-Bellegarde.
"This more central position in France will enable us to reach any part of the country in less than one hour," production manager Tristan Blaudet says. "Our new Aero Commander 690A will dramatically increase the capacity of image capture. The pressurised turboprop benefits from a very big performance with some eight hours of autonomy and a range of 1800 nm at a cruising speed of 550 km/h."
The 690A joins a Cessna 402B, two PA 23s and a Cessna 206 which IMAO says is the largest in the French private aerial survey world, enabling the company to tailor services to client's individual needs.
Hubert Rault, foreman and aircraft mechanic, says aircraft maintenance efficiency will benefit from a new 1,200 sq m warehouse providing dedicated maintenance facilities.
IMAO, which specialises in Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, operates two large format digital cameras. It also operates a medium format digital sensor IGI-H39 and two LiDAR systems: the LM5600 and the LM6800 from IGI, as well as two analogue cameras. "All devices are equipped with navigation systems CCNS4 and inertial measurement units. LiDAR offers advantages in both data acquisition and processing as compared to traditional photogrammetric elevation data gathering methods," Blaudet adds.
The company says it has strengthened its flight crews and production crew by hiring more pilots Blaudet adds: "IMAO is determined to stay a market leader in the field of aerial acquisition for both national and international projects. The 2010 season began with projects in North and West Africa and northern Europe."

"IMAO, société d’acquisition aérienne (prises de vues numériques & LIDAR) s’installe dès le 1er Avril 2010 dans ses nouveaux locaux de l’aéroport de Limoges – Bellegarde. Cette position plus centrale dans la France, permet d’atteindre n’importe quelle partie du territoire national en moins d’une heure.
La flotte s’agrandit avec l’arrivée d’un cinquième avion, un Aéro Commander 690A permettant de multiplier par deux la capacité de capture d’images. Cet avion, turbopropulsé et pressurisé a des performances impressionnantes : une autonomie de 7 heures permettant de voler sur une distance de 3300 Km (1800 Miles) à une vitesse de croisière de 550 Km/h et à un plafond de 9000m (FL310). Outre cet avion, la flotte est composée d’un Cessna 402B bimoteur, de deux Piper PA23 Aztec bimoteurs et d’un Cessna 206 monomoteur. Cette flotte, de loin la plus importante dans la photographie aérienne privée française, permet une grande souplesse d’adaptation en fonction des caractéristiques des vols de ses clients.
IMAO renforce ses moyens opérationnels en ouvrant dans son nouveau hangar de 1200 m² un atelier de maintenance dédié. Hubert RAULT chef d’atelier et mécanicien aéronautique depuis 25 ans aura la charge de la maintenance de la flotte.
En termes de capteurs, la société IMAO met en œuvre 2 caméras numériques grand format (Vexcel UCX et UCXp), un capteur numérique moyen format IGI-H39, deux systèmes LIDAR : LM5600 et LM6800 le dernier né de la société IGI, ainsi que deux caméras argentiques. Tous ces appareils sont équipés de systèmes de navigation CCNS4 et de centrales inertielles (IMU).
Dans le cadre de ce déploiement, IMAO renforce ses équipes de vol et de production en embauchant plusieurs pilotes ainsi qu’un Directeur de Production en la personne de Tristan BLAUDET qui aura la responsabilité des activités de production.

Microsoft’s Vexcel Imaging GmbH Sells UltraCamXp to IMAO
" Graz, Austria — Vexcel Imaging GmbH, a Microsoft® company, recently signed a purchase agreement with French aerial mapping company, IMAO - Aerial Survey, for an UltraCamXp (UCXp) large format digital aerial camera system. The sale marks the first digital sensor for IMAO and the first UltraCamXp sold into France.
Considered to be specialists in aerial photography—including oblique photography—and airborne laser scanner (LIDAR) for photogrammetric applications, in particular for European and African countries, IMAO had flown aerial operations in Europe and Africa using an UltraCamX belonging to Groupe Degaud. This experience factored heavily into the company’s decision to purchase an UltraCamXP.
“We wanted to purchase a large format digital aerial camera and at the same time, establish a long term relationship with the technology provider,” said Pierre Farout, General Manager for IMAO. “With Vexcel Imaging, we feel we have found the right technology and the right partner.”
The UltraCamXp builds on the highly successful UltraCamX. It delivers 17,310 across-track and 11,310 along-track panchromatic pixels, the largest image format available. The resolution ratio of 1:3 between color and pan bands allows for the production of high-resolution pan-sharpened products that are very suitable for photogrammetric and remote sensing applications. The low-cost, exchangeable on-board storage devices store up to 6,600 images, further improving the efficiency of data collection. Higher image quality is made possible by improved dynamic range.

"Pour Pierre Farout, voler était un rêve d'enfant. Géomètre de métier, il a su concilier profession et passion: Sa société, basée à Glisy, dans la Somme, réalise clichés et relevés aériens sur l’ensemble de la planète. Une passion à donner des ailes.
Plus tard, demeurant à Brie, dans la Somme, Pierre réalise ses premiers plans: Les rues, l’église, les maisons et l’école de la commune. Son itinéraire professionnel le conduira ensuite à la Réunion, où il s'installe comme géomètre.
